Reflective tape is adhesive retroreflective marking tape: it returns headlight beam back toward the driver, so a marked truck, trailer or piece of equipment reads brightly at night from the direction that matters. What is reflective tape and how does it work?
The tape's surface is built to retroreflect: instead of scattering light like ordinary paint, it bounces incoming light back toward its source. A driver's own headlights light the tape up, which is why marked equipment appears to glow at night even though the tape does nothing of the sort, it is simply handing the light straight back. By day, the vivid yellow does the work instead.
The UAGS tape is 3M Class 1 marking tape: water resistant, non-corroding, with a peel-off backing for direct application. A note on naming: retroreflective performance classes for sheeting materials are defined in AS/NZS 1906.1, and while work-zone sign sheeting is now commonly described in Class 400 series terms, adhesive marking tapes are still widely sold under the long-standing Class 1 designation. Where is reflective tape used on work vehicles and equipment?
The classic job is conspicuity marking on trucks, trailers and large vehicles: lines of tape along the sides and rear that make the vehicle's outline readable at night. From there the same roll covers a long list of worksite jobs, marking the rear of tray bodies and tailgates, the edges of racking and equipment that overhangs, gate posts and bollards at depot entrances, and plant that works or parks where vehicles move at night.
One boundary worth drawing: traffic control devices come with their reflective elements built in and specified. A cone's white band and a barrier board's yellow stripes are part of the device under AS 1742.3, sized and positioned by the standard, so tape's job is marking your vehicles and equipment, not substituting for the reflective elements traffic devices are required to carry. How do you apply reflective tape so it lasts?
The tape is peel-and-stick, and nearly every early failure traces back to the surface rather than the tape. A few habits keep it stuck:
- Clean and dry first. Wash off dirt, degrease, and let the surface dry completely before the backing comes off. Adhesive bonds to whatever it touches first, and if that is dust, the tape is stuck to dust.
- Work on smooth, sound surfaces. Painted metal, aluminium and smooth panels hold well. Flaking paint, rust and textured surfaces do not.
- Press firmly along the full length. Run a firm hand or a clean cloth along the tape to seat the adhesive, paying attention to the ends and edges.
- Do not stretch it on. Tape stretched around a curve pulls back toward its original length and lifts at the edges. Cut shorter sections for curved surfaces instead.
- Replace it when it dulls. Reflective tape that has gone dull, cracked or peeled is no longer doing its job at night. It is a consumable; the per-metre option exists for exactly this.
Per metre or the roll: how much do you need?
The same 50mm tape comes two ways. Per metre at $6 suits patch repairs, a tailgate, a pair of gate posts, or trying the tape before committing. The 45.7 metre roll at $200 works out around $4.40 a metre, about 27% less, and is the buy for marking out a truck or trailer, running lines down racking, or keeping a roll in the workshop so every vehicle that comes through gets touched up.

What about barrier and danger tape?
Barrier tape and danger tape get bought as "that striped tape" alongside reflective tape, but they are a different product doing a different job. They are not retroreflective: they are printed plastic tape strung up as a daytime visual boundary, marking off an excavation, a wet floor, a storage area or a no-go corner of a site. Danger tape carries the printed DANGER legend; red and white barrier tape is the general-purpose version, printed both sides so it reads from either direction.
Two limits keep their use honest. They are a visual cue, not a physical barrier, and AS 1742.3 is specific that barrier boards or tapes shall not be used for pedestrian containment adjacent to moving traffic, that job belongs to proper channelizing devices and fencing. String tape where a flapping plastic line is enough of a message, and use the proper devices where people and traffic meet.

What surfaces does reflective tape stick to?

Can I use reflective tape instead of the band on a traffic cone?
No. Traffic control devices carry reflective elements that are specified by AS 1742.3, sized and positioned by the standard, a 700mm cone carries a 250mm collar, for example. A strip of tape is not that. Tape's job is marking your own vehicles and equipment.
How long does reflective tape last?
It depends on exposure, washing and handling, so there is no single figure. Treat it as a consumable: when the tape has gone dull, cracked or started lifting, it is no longer visible at night the way it should be, and a few dollars a metre replaces it.
